What is an End Milling Cutter?
End milling cutters are precision rotary cutting tools used in industrial milling machines and CNC systems. It is used for operations such as slotting, profiling, contouring, and plunge cutting. Most drill bits are cut only in the axial (downward) direction. End mills have cutting edges on both the tip and along the sides. This allows them to cut in multiple directions simultaneously.
Maxwell Tools manufactures end mills exclusively from high-speed steel (HSS) in three premium grades: M2 for general-purpose machining; M35 (8% cobalt) for improved heat resistance and harder materials; and ASP 2030 powder-metallurgy steel for maximum tool life in demanding applications. All our end milling cutters undergo advanced heat treatment processes developed over nearly 50 years of manufacturing experience.
Types of End Milling Cutters We Offer
Square End Mills
Most versatile type. Slotting, profiling, side milling, plunge cutting. Available in 2-flute and 4-flute.
Ball Nose End Mills
Hemispherical tip for 3D contouring, mold cavities, and complex curved surfaces. Ideal for die & mold.
Corner Radius End Mills
Rounded corner (0.5–5mm radius) for semi-finishing. Prevents chipping and extends tool life.
Roughing End Mills
Serrated cutting edges for heavy material removal. Reduces vibration during heavy cuts.
Shell End Mills
Large-diameter cutters (40mm+) that mount on an arbor. For face milling and large flat surfaces.
Custom Profile End Mills
Made to your exact specs — non-standard diameters, lengths, flute geometries, and special profiles.

Applications of End Milling Cutters
Among milling tools, end milling cutters are among the most widely used across industries. It is due to their versatility and precision. Here are some of their common applications:
- Automotive manufacturing for engine and component machining
- Aerospace for precision parts and complex geometries
- Tool and die making for molds and dies
- General CNC machining for metal and plastic components
- Fabrication industries for custom part production
These tools play a critical role in achieving tight tolerances. They also help to get high-quality finishes.
How to Choose the Right End Milling Cutter
Selecting the right end milling cutter depends on several factors:
Material Type
- HSS end milling cutters are cost-effective and suitable for softer materials
- Carbide end milling cutters offer higher durability and are ideal for hard materials
Coating
- TiN coating improves tool life
- TiAlN coating is suitable for high-temperature applications
Flute Count
- 2 flutes for better chip removal
- 4 flutes for smoother finishes
Cutting Speed
Choosing the correct speed ensures better performance and longer tool life.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
An end milling cutter is a rotary cutting tool used in CNC and manual milling machines. They can be used for slotting, profiling, contouring, and plunge cutting. End mills have cutting edges on the tip and sides. This allows multi-directional cutting.
Drill bits cut only axially (downward) to make holes. End milling cutters have cutting edges on both sides and tips, allowing them to cut sideways, make slots, profiles, pockets, and contours. They are far more versatile than a drill bit.
Select based on slot width or feature size. Use the largest diameter your operation allows for rigidity. 2-flute for aluminum and slotting (more chip clearance), 4-flute for steel and finishing (better surface finish and faster feed rates).
We manufacture in three grades: HSS M2 (general purpose), HSS M35 with 8% cobalt (improved heat resistance for stainless and alloy steels), and ASP 2030 powder metallurgy steel (maximum performance and tool life).
